Students and teachers at La Salle High School in Pasadena
were recently honored for various artistic skills and endeavors.
"Tap
Roots: The Early History of Tap Dancing,," written by La Salle
dance instructor Mark Knowles, received the American Library
Association's Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title.
Published by McFarland and Co. (2002), "Tap Roots traces the
development of tap dancing from ancient India to the Broadway
stage; it is available at Vroman's in Pasadena, among other
stores.
The school's Jazz Band and Jazz Combo programs, under the
direction of Megan Foley, placed fourth and third, respectively,
in the La Mirada Jazz festival held May 1. Sam Broderick,
a La Salle junior bass guitarist who plays in the ensemble,
was awarded the school's first Joseph Antonisamy Memorial
Scholarship for Music. The scholarship was named on behalf
of the school's longtime music and math teacher who passed
away in 2003.
