Glendorans recognize diversity, celebrate unity at concert

San Gabriel Region
text only version

Four church choirs of the city of Glendora gathered at St. Dorothy Church May 23 for a concert of sacred and patriotic music. The large audience was treated to a celebration of unity in praise of God and Country, presented by the choirs of the Glendora First Christian Church, the Loraine Avenue Baptist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and St. Dorothy Church.

The concert was the eighth renewal of an annual tradition started in the Loraine Avenue Baptist Church by their pastor, the Reverend Luff Johnson, who envisioned the need for fostering the spirit of unity. All the leaders of the participating churches saw the continuing need to celebrate our oneness in music, especially in these days of severe division in our great nation.

From the opening hymn, "The Heavens Are Telling" and "The Creation" by Haydn to the finale of the 2004 concert, the patriotic salute to our flag, "There She Stands" by Michael Smith, which received a standing ovation, it was clear that the choirs had achieved their goal: arouse a common emotion by combining 104 voices in one concert of praise.
