Loyola High School won its seventh CIF-Southern Section boys
volleyball title May 29, continuing a tradition that includes
former Olympian Sinjin Smith and current coach Mike Boehle.
The
Cubs' 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Westlake was led
by C.J. Schellenberg, Andy McGuire, Jeff Sauce, Matt Thobe
and Matt Hiller. Coach Boehle is a former Cub player and pro
beach volleyball star, and this year's team finished 22-2.
In track, Bishop Amat's Jasmine Baldwin won the 100- and
200-meter races in the Southern Section Girls Masters Meet
held last weekend. In the boys competition, Notre Dame and
Serra finished 3-4 in the 400 relay, while Loyola's Mark Matusak
was fifth in the 1600 meters.
In softball, Alverno became the only Catholic team to reach
the championship round by defeating Woodcrest Christian 1-0
in the Division VI semifinals played June 1. The championship
game will be played at Barber Park in Irvine either June 4
or 5.
The Jaguars --- last year's CIF-Southern Section Division
VI runner-up --- finished the Horizon League season undefeated,
bringing their softball record to 56 straight wins in league
play. Coached by Frank Russo, the team includes Sue Capra,
Vanessa Cullen, Monique Escamilla, Celina Flores, Rebecca
Garcia, Kristine Martin, Paula Morreale, Bryana Pickford,
Stephanie Pickford, Erica Ramirez, Katelyn Scott, Elena Soto,
Jessica Stewart, Kim Swisher, Veronica Vasquez and Danielle
Vega.
Mater
Dei was beaten in the Division I semifinals by Pasadena Poly,
3-0 in 8 innings, and St. Paul lost its Division IV semifinal
game to Oaks Christian 4-2.
In baseball, Crespi (27-4) earned a berth in the Division
III championship game June 5 at Dodger Stadium after it edged
La Mirada 7-6 in the semifinals June 1. The Celts --- the
only Catholic team to reach the semis --- are led by pitching
ace Trevor Plouffe.
In boys tennis, Loyola (20-3) defeated Woodbridge in the
Division I semifinals May 27, and will play Harvard-Westlake
(20-0) for the championship June 2.
