Post-season action winds down for Catholic teams

Bishop Amat's baseball and softball teams, Loyola's volleyball and tennis teams, and a host of other Catholic schools in these sports are still in the running for CIF-Southern Section division championships.

The baseball and softball tournaments move into the quarterfinal rounds this Friday, with semifinal action in boys tennis on Thursday and the boys volleyball finals on Saturday. A sport-by-sport breakdown:

Baseball

In second round action May 25:

Division I: Bishop Amat blanked San Clemente 2-0, and will play Arlington in the quarterfinals May 28. Santa Margarita lost to Esperanza 4-2.

Division III: Crespi moved into the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Palm Desert, as did Chaminade with a 12-3 triumph over Silverado. Alemany was beaten 11-6 by Westminster. The quarterfinals will pit Crespi against Ocean View and Chaminade against Lutheran.

Division IV: St. Joseph/Santa Maria edged St. Paul 4-3; St. Bernard lost 4-3 to La Quinta; and St. Bonaventure lost 13-7 to San Dimas. St. Joseph will play Northwood in the quarterfinals

Division V: Paraclete edged Grace Brethren 2-1, but La Salle dropped a 9-1 decision to Oxford Academy. In the quarters, Paraclete meets Ontario Christian.

Softball

Second round action from May 25 included:

Division I: Bishop Amat blanked Etiwanda 5-0; Rosary stopped Valencia 3-1; Mater Dei beat Foothill 5-2. The May 28 quarterfinals feature Bishop Amat vs. Los Alamitos, Mater Dei vs. Royal, and Rosary vs. Camarillo.

Division IV: St. Paul bounced Victor Valley 9-1, and will play La Puente in the quarterfinals.

Division V: La Reina and La Salle advanced to the quarterfinals with 7-0 and 7-1 wins over Campbell Hall and Lancaster Desert Christian, respectively; Arrowhead Christian beat St. Bonaventure 7-2. In the quarterfinals, it will be La Reina against Valley Christian, and La Salle against Ontario Christian.

Division VI: Alverno stooped Rolling Hills Prep 11-0, but Sacred Heart lost to Riverside Christian 11-0. Alverno will play Valley Christian in the quarterfinals.

Boys Volleyball

Division I semifinal action May 26 will find Loyola (20-2) taking on Fountain Valley, with the winner meeting Woodbridge or Westlake in the finals on May 29 at Cypress College.

La Salle (15-7) will play Windward in the semifinals of Division V. The victor will play Pasadena Poly or Sage Hill for the championship.

Boys Tennis

In Division I, Loyola defeated Corona Del Mar 11-7 in the quarterfinals May 25, and will play Woodbridge in the semifinals May 27. Mater Dei lost 11-7 to Santa Barbara.

Villanova was edged by Milken in the Division V quarters, tying 9-9 in sets but losing 74-67 in games.

Swimming

The May 12-15 CIF-SS championships produced a number of successes for local Catholic schools. In boys individual competition, the results included:

Division I: Servite 1st and Damien 2nd in the 200 medley relay; Damien's Michael Carter, 3rd in the 200 freestyle and 4th in the 100 freestyle; Servite's Adam Hewko, 3rd in the 100 breaststroke and 4th in the 200 IM; Servite's Brent Hurley 3rd and Mater Dei's Robert Hansen 5th in the 50 freestyle; Crespi's Patrick Simpkins, 5th in the 100 butterfly; Loyola's Aaron Casey, 4th in the 500 free and 5th in the 100 backstroke; Servite and Damien, 1st and 4th in the 200 free relay; Mater Dei's Andrew Simo, 4th in the 100 backstroke; Chaminade's Blake Nilsson, 4th in the 100 breaststroke.

Division III: La Salle's Danny Evanilla, 2nd in the 200 free, 3rd in the 500 free.

Division IV: St. Bonaventure's John Paul Oliver, 1st in the 200 freestyle, 1st in the 100 butterfly; St. Bonaventure's William Craig, 1st in the 50 free, 2nd in the 100 free; Bishop Amat's John Curtis Caropino, 5th in the 100 butterfly; St. Bonaventure, 4th in the 200 freestyle relay.

In girls individual competition, results included:

Division I: Rosary's Kalen Hewko 4th in the 100 freestyle; Louisville's Peggy Kearns, 5th in 1-meter diving; Alemany's Renee Viveros, 2nd in the 100 backstroke and 3rd in the 100 butterfly; Alemany's Leah Tourtellotte, 2nd in the 100 free; Mater Dei's Marissa Joseph, 4th in the 500 free; Santa Margarita's Devonie Migues, 4th in the 100 backstroke.

Division III: Mayfield, 1st in the 200 medley relay, 2nd in the 400 freestyle relay; Mayfield's Ann Tsuchiya, 1st in both the 100 free and 200 free; Mayfield's Katherine Kime, 2nd in the 200 IM, 2nd in 100 butterfly; Mayfield's Carmen Stellar, 2nd in 1-meter diving; St. Joseph's Samantha Kephart, 1st in the 100 butterfly, 3rd in the 100 free; Alverno's Marina Montoya, 4th in the 100 butterfly.

Division IV: La Reina, 2nd in the 200 medley relay, 2nd in the 400 free relay; Notre Dame Academy, 5th, in the 200 medley relay; Notre Dame Academy's Kathryn Smith, 1st in the 200 IM, 4th in the 100 breaststroke; La Reina's Emily Bibb, 1st in the 50 free, 2nd in the 100 free; La Reina's Veronica Espino, 5th in the 100 butterfly.
