St. John Bosco High School student Richard Benavente was recently named the winner of a $20,000 college scholarship from the Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce and Industrial League, Inc.

Benavente was awarded "The Destiny Fund" scholarship at a May 5 ceremony on the Bellflower campus by members of the scholarship selection committee.

"He is an individual that far surpasses what might be expected of a teenager," writes St. John Bosco spokesperson Kerry Dusserre. "Besides being an outstanding student and a top level athlete, Richard finds time to give back to his Catholic community as he serves as a lector and usher at his parish of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Paramount."

Benavente, an honor roll student, has maintained a 3.8 GPA while serving as vice president of his junior and senior class and vice president of the National Honor Society.
