CIF volleyball, tennis playoffs begin

CIF-Southern Section playoff action in spring sports gets underway this week, with boys tennis and boys' volleyball action taking the stage.

The volleyball playoffs began May 12 with wild card round, followed by first round action on May 14. In Division V, the wild card round featured Salesian, Serra, Providence and Mary Star all trying to gain entry into the first round, where they would join Camino Real League champion St. Bernard and Santa Fe League co-champ La Salle.

In Division I, Mission League champion Loyola and Serra League co-champs Santa Margarita and Mater Dei are joined by Bishop Montgomery, St. John Bosco, Crtespi and Alemany in the first round.

In Division IV, Del Rey League co-champs Bishop Amat and Cathedral, plus third-place finisher Don Bosco Tech, are first round participants.

Tennis action begins May 17 with first round matches. In Division I, Serra League winner Mater Dei is joined by Santa Margarita, Loyola, Notre Dame and Servite, while St. Bonaventure plays in Division III.

The CIF-SS diving championships were held May 11, with several Catholic schools represented among the top finishers. Marisa Samaniego of Flintridge Sacred Heart was second and Peggy Kearns of Louisville was fifth in Division I, while Carmen Stellar of Mayfield was second in Division III.
