Obituaries include religious sisters, laity

Sister Mary Stella Simpson, DC
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 21 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind., for Daughter of Charity Sister Mary Stella Simpson, 93, who died April 19.

Born in Mount Ida, Ark., she entered the Daughter of Charity Community at St. Louis in 1936. She earned a B.S. degree in Education Administration and Nursing from DePaul University in Chicago and also received certification as a nurse-midwife from the Catholic Maternity Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

For 31 years, Sister Simpson was supervisor of maternity departments in health care facilities run by the Daughters of Charity. She served at DePaul Hospital, St. Louis; St. Vincent Infant Home, Chicago; and St. Vincent Hospital, Los Angeles, from 1955-58.

Survivors include two nieces, Georgia Simpson of Evansville, Indiana and Joyce Webb of Netherland, Texas and several cousins.

Sister Mary Helen Neff, SP
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 1 at Church of the Immaculate Conception in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana for Providence Sister Mary Helen Neff, 83, who died March 29.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1921, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1943, professing final vows in 1950. Sister Neff taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana, Illinois, District of Columbia and California, including St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City from 1986-89.

Survivors include sisters, Bertha Neff and Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sister Carolyn Louise Neff, and a brother, Anthony Neff. Burial was at the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Mary Zoe Dieter, OP

Funeral Mass was celebrated April 26 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin for Dominican Sister Mary Zoe Dieter, 91, who died April 19.

Born in Vail, Iowa in 1912, Sister Dieter made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1934 and took final vows in 1937. She was an elementary and primary teacher for 34 years, serving in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Alabama, Nebraska, Wyoming and California. In the Los Angeles Archdiocese, she taught at Saint Thomas More School, Alhambra from 1953-59.

Burial was in the Motherhouse Cemetery at Sinsinawa.

Melvin Francis Tamberg
Cardinal Roger Mahony presided at a memorial Mass April 12 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, North Hollywood, for Melvin Francis Tamberg, 74, who died March 5.

Born in San Francisco, he was the third son of Arthur and Hilda Tamberg, immigrants from Estonia. He attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of California. A real estate appraiser, he was married to his wife, Bebe, for 43 years and was the father of two sons, Tod and Scott. Tod Tamberg is media relations director for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Funeral Mass was celebrated March 10 at Mission San Fernando Rey Chapel, Mission Hills. Interment was at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

Arthur J. Bauler
Funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum April 20 for Arthur J. Bauler, 84, who died April 15. Bauler was father of Msgr. Gary P. Bauler, pastor of St. Peter Claver Church in Simi Valley, and Timothy M. Bauler.
