Death and hope at Dolores Mission Church

text only version

Maricela Hernandez blesses with oil the palm of L.A. Mayor James K. Hahn at Dolores Mission Church in Boyle Heights April 18. The mayor had earlier responded to pleas from the community for greater safety measures by announcing that public housing projects throughout the city will receive $2.2 million for extra security. Hernandez' son Jesus Alejandro, 19, was killed by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting March 10. The young construction worker, who had avoided gangs, had been walking to his home after work. "Our wounds can be wounds of healing and glory instead of total tragedy," said Jesuit Father Michael Kennedy, pastor.
