St. John Bosco High School senior Richard Benaventa was recently
named the winner of the "Spirit of Sport" Award by the California
Interscholastic Federation. The award "recognizes students
who live the ideals or pursue victory with honor in their
lives and athletic endeavors," said school spokesperson Kerry
Dusserre.
Benaventa was recognized for his success as a student, athlete
and volunteer while maintaining a 3.8 GPA and being an honor
roll student. He will be honored at a special dinner on May
7 in Santa Clara.
Benavente
played a key position on St. John Bosco's varsity wrestling
team, in spite of a birth defect that prevented his right
arm from developing, and played on the football team his freshman
and sophomore years. For the past two years his peers and
coaches have elected him "Most Inspirational Player."
"Mr. Benavente is not afraid of challenge," said athletic
director Monty McDermott. "He is a young man who forges ahead
and tackles whatever job or task that is placed before him
with dignity and respect."
In addition to his achievement at the Bellflower school,
Benavente also serves as a lector and usher at Our Lady of
the Rosary Church in Paramount and volunteers regularly at
the Catholic Workers Soup Kitchen in downtown L.A. and the
Food Pantry in Santa Fe Springs.
