Mass of Christian Burial will be held April 24 at 11 a.m.
at Mother of Good Counsel Church, Los Angeles, for Immaculate
Heart Sister M. Ruth Kent, former librarian at Immaculate
Heart College and St. John's Seminary, who died April 19.
A
1987 recipient of the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice Medal for
25 years of service to St. John's Seminary, Sister Kent worked
the last 14 years of her life as a full-time volunteer at
the Braille Institute of America. The diminutive nun, known
for her friendly demeanor, was a sister of the late Corita
Kent, the celebrated artist who headed the art department
for many years at Immaculate Heart College.
Born in 1912 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she graduated from Catholic
Girls' High School in Los Angeles and entered the novitiate
of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1930. She
earned a B.A. and a teaching credential at Immaculate Heart
College as well as a graduate degree in library science from
the University of Southern California.
Her teaching assignments included: Immaculate Heart of Mary
School, Los Angeles; Saint Anthony's School, Long Beach; Our
Mother of Good Counsel School, Los Angeles; Immaculate Heart
Training School, Los Angeles; Our Lady of Mercy School, Merced;
Our Lady of Soledad, Los Angeles; Blessed Sacrament School,
Hollywood; Cathedral Chapel School and Catholic Girls' High
School, Los Angeles; St. Bernardine School, San Bernardino;
and Tstarlip Indian School, Victoria, Canada.
From 1952-1961, Sister Kent served as librarian at Immaculate
Heart College, and, from 1961-1990, she worked as a librarian
at Saint John's Seminary College. Survivors include family
members Audrey Kent, Michael R. and Carolin Hoff, and Linda
Davis.

Mary Duane Benvegnu, CSC
Funeral Mass was celebrated March 31 at Church of Our Lady
of Loretto, Notre Dame, Indiana for Holy Cross Sister Mary
Duane (formerly Violette Lucia) Benvegnu, who died March 27
at Saint Mary's Convent in Notre Dame.
Born in Bingham, Utah, she served in several schools and
parishes in California, Nevada, Utah and Texas. Her teaching
career included stints at St. Paul School, Los Angeles; St.
Barnabas School, Long Beach; St. Agnes School, Los Angeles;
and Pius X High School, Downey. She served in parish ministry
in California and Texas and also worked in the '80s with migrants
in the Fresno area.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the
Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, 401 Bertrand Hall,
Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

Eleanor McAuliffe, SP
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 2 in the Church of the Immaculate
Conception in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana for Providence
Sister Eleanor McAuliffe (formerly Nellie Bernadine), 90,
who died March 29.
Born
in Chevy Chase, Md., she entered the Sisters of Providence
in 1932 and graduated from the Catholic University of America
with an M.A. in education administration. She taught and served
as principal in several schools around the country, including
St. Elisabeth, Van Nuys (1962-63).
Survivors include a brother, Thomas McAuliffe of Rockville,
Maryland and many nieces and nephews. Burial took place at
the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods
in Indiana.
