Tattoo removal program receives funding

By Paula Doyle
text only version

The free Tattoo Removal Program at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills received a $148,000 check from Congressman Howard Berman (D-Panorama City), allowing continuation of the project started by Dominican Sister June Wilkerson in 1998.

Berman earmarked the funds in the Federal Omnibus Appropriations Bill that passed last month.

More than 1,277 youth and adults, including former gang members, have benefited from the program removing visible tattoos. Not only can visible tattoos invite retaliation from rival gangs, they hinder employment and promotions.

In exchange for having tattoos removed with a laser at no cost, clients have provided more than 80,000 volunteer hours of community service, or have attended classes to improve their lives.
