A
free performance by Mariachi Divas, a multi-cultural musical
ensemble representing women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Costa
Rican, Panamanian, Japanese, Honduran and Anglo descent, will
be offered April 14 at Mount St. Mary's College (Doheny Campus),
Los Angeles.
Mariachi Divas plays a traditional ensemble of guitarrón,
vihuela, guitar, violins, and trumpets, and adds unconventional
flavors with timbales, congas, bongos, tambora, percussion
and flute. The group has been featured at the Arrowhead Pond
and the Universal Amphitheatre, and performed at Unity Day
2002, a charity event for families of 9/11 victims.
The
group also performed for more than 500,000 people last year
in downtown Los Angeles as part of the annual Fiesta Broadway
2003 Cinco de Mayo celebration. The 11 women regularly perform
at Disneyland's Frontierland, and have appeared in numerous
television commercials.
The 7 p.m. event is sponsored by the college's Mind and
Spirit Committee, which presents cultural events designed
to engage students, faculty, staff and the community. The
concert takes place in the Doheny Campus lecture hall, 10
Chester Place, Los Angeles. For information: (213) 477-2572
