The
work of celebrated artist Corita Kent will be on display at
the Claremont School of Theology including pieces from her
Circus and International Signal Code themes, and pop art using
brand name labels, political motifs and quotes from literary
and religious sources.
On exhibition through May 15, "The Power of Corita" will
be featured on three floors of the school's campus library
and chapel. Kent's entire "Moments" series will be presented
as well as her Beatitudes banner that was displayed at the
1964 World's Fair in New York City.
Kent,
also known as Sister Corita, gained international fame for
her vibrant serigraphs during the 1960s and 1970s. A Sister
of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, she was part of the Art Department
at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles until 1968 when
she left the order and moved to Boston. Her art reflects both
internal spirituality and a commitment to social justice.
