Alemany wins local decathlon, heads to state tournament

Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills regained its title as regional academic decathlon winner Feb. 7, besting last year's winner, St. Francis High School, in the closest race ever between the two schools.

The Alemany team collected a total of 43,768 points, while the St. Francis team from La Caņada came in second place with 43,396 points. Placing third overall was La Caņada's Flintridge-Sacred Heart High School with 35,790 points.

Two members of Alemany's team placed in the top three overall competitions. Sujin Cho was the second place silver medallist, winning 7,636 points out of a possible 10,000, while Amanda Velasquez won the third place bronze medal with a total score of 7,556. The top gold medal winner for the competition was Alex Davis of St. Francis High School with a total score of 7,975 points.

The Alemany team members will compete in the State Championships in Sacramento March 12-14.
