Jewish-Catholic relations: A resource guide

text only version

Mindful not only of the release of "The Passion of the Christ" film but also of celebrations of Lent, Easter and Passover, the U.S. Bishops' Conference offers various resources designed to assist Catholics in developing and improving relationships with members of the Jewish faith.

For information on ordering any of these resources, call USCCB Publishing, 1-800-235-8722; write to USCCB Publishing, 3211 4th St. NE, Washington, DC 20017-1194; or visit www.usccb.org/publishing.

The Bible, the Jews and the Death of Jesus: A Collection of Catholic Documents: This brings together in one place excerpts from official documents of the Church pertaining to the presentation of the Passion and Death of Christ, whether in classrooms or from the pulpit, in Passion Plays or media dramatizations. Its intent is not only to end prejudices against Jews and Judaism, but also to better understand salvation in Christ by seeing the unique place of Jews and of the Jewish religion in the unfolding of salvation. (No. 5-618, 144 pp., $11.95.)

Catholic Teaching on the Shoah: Implementing the Holy See's "We Remember": Designed to assist Catholic schools on all levels, the U.S. bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs provides reflections on the 1998 statement on the Holocaust. Answering the question, "Why do Catholics study the Shoah?", the publication offers ways to frame issues properly and sensitively for this audience using historical and theological contexts. Additional resources are provided to aid in developing curricula and furthering dialogue. (No. 5-406, 32 pp., $3.95.)

Catholics Remember the Holocaust: Centering on the Vatican statement "We Remember: A Reflection on the "Shoah," issued by the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, this publication includes the full text of the document, with introduction and commentaries. A bibliography is included. (No. 5-290, 84 pp., $6.95.)

Catholic Jewish Relations: Documents from the Holy See: This new collection includes the Declarations on the Relationships of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate, 1965), Guidelines and Suggestions for Implementing the Conciliar Declaration Nostra Aetate (1974), Notes on the Correct Way to Present the Jews and Judaism in Preaching and Catechesis in the Roman Catholic Church (1985), and We Remember: A Reflection on the "Shoah" (1998). Published by the Catholic Truth Society. (No. 062-X, 88 pp., $6.95.)

God's Mercy Endures Forever: Guidelines on the Presentation of Jews and Judaism in Catholic Preaching From the U.S. bishops' Committee on the Liturgy. (No. 247-0, 24 pp., $3.50.)

On Jews and Judaism, 1979-1986: Compilation of reflections from Pope John Paul II includes an introduction and commentary prepared by the U.S. bishops' Committee for Ecu-menical and Interreligious Affairs. (No. 151-2, 97 pp., $9.95.)
