text only version

The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team used a 51.9 first half field goal percentage to clinch its first West Coast Conference regular season title by defeating Pepperdine 58-39 Feb. 21 in Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions, winners of 11 straight contests, secured the top ranking entering the WCC Tournament, which will be held March 4-7 at Santa Clara University.

Late in the first half, the Lions went on a 11-0 run, holding the Waves scoreless for almost seven minutes. Sophomore Rachael Ziemann, senior Kate Murray and Mary Turner hit the key baskets.

Senior Adrianne Slaughter, the WCC's third all-time leader in blocked shots, picked up four, while Murray scored 20 points, her 15th straight game in double digits, plus seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

LMU will conclude regular season play in Gersten Pavilion, against San Francisco and Saint Mary's Feb. 26 and Feb. 28.

"We've assembled a great group of players, and I am so proud of them and happy for them tonight," said head coach Julie Wilhoit after the game. "It was very special to be able to win the title in Gersten Pavilion in front of our fans, who have supported us all along."
