Education Foundation honors seniors

text only version

Appreciation and gratitude were expressed for the work of the Catholic Education Foundation at a Mass and breakfast Feb. 8 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, an event honoring the senior class of 2004.

"My parents have sacrificed so that I can attend Cathedral High and my brothers and sister can also attend Catholic schools," Amado Cariņo told 400 guests. "I thank God who has blessed us this day and all of the donors of the Catholic Education Foundation for the tuition support that I receive."

At the breakfast, Cardinal Roger Mahony praised the students, their families, and trustees, donors and staff of the Catholic Education Foundation, and noted that the foundation needs to grow to serve more students.

The Foundation was established 16 years ago, providing $500,000 the first year in tuition aid to support 750 students. Today it provides $5.5 million in scholarships to 6,000 elementary and high school students. More than 1,300 attend Catholic high schools and 291 are graduating this year.

Rob Smith, Catholic Education Foundation president, said students are selected to receive scholarships on the basis of financial need and on the recommendation of their principal as to academic achievement, school involvement and character.
