St. Bernard Catholic High School recognized director of development
and alumnus Carolyn Quijano for her 40 years of service to
Catholic education in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. A Mass,
celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Edward M. Clark, and a reception
were held recently in Quijano's honor on the SBHS campus in
Playa del Rey.
Quijano began her career at Bishop Montgomery Catholic High
School in Torrance teaching typing and health and coaching
girls' basketball. In her tenure there, she also taught AP
History, and, in 1977 was appointed Dean of Discipline. She
also served as assistant principal before being appointed
principal at Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro.
Quijano joined St. Bernard's administrative staff in 1987.
Quijano believes her current responsibilities as Director
of Development and Alumni are "not so much about money, but
about establishing relationships, about giving a sense of
belonging and participation for SBHS former students and supporters."
"I
want to invite people to come and see the dynamic things we're
doing here at St. Bernard's," she said. "The students have
been the cornerstone of my career. It is truly remarkable
and rewarding to hear so many say 'thanks for being a great
teacher!' Parents have also been so supportive; they always
have said everything is possible."
Quijano earned a B.A. in social studies at California State
University, Long Beach, and a master's degree in education
from Mount Saint Mary's College. She also holds secondary
education and administrative credentials.
Currently a Torrance resident, the Southern California native
has a large, extended family "throughout the county."
